Rich jewellery collection of God Odin, Thor and Loki amulets, Norse axes and knives, Germanic Gods Idols, Viking Torques and Armlets, etc.

The Viking Age was a time of great craftsmanship and creativity, and the Vikings were renowned for their exquisite jewellery. Here are some types of Viking Age jewellery and techniques used to produce them and we use today to create real Norse masterpieces for you:

  1. Brooches - made of bronze, silver or gold, with intricate designs and often used to fasten clothing.
  2. Necklaces - made of beads, silver, gold, or glass, sometimes with pendants or amulets.
  3. Vikings Arm rings - made of twisted or braided silver, gold, or bronze wire, worn on the upper arm.
  4. Pagan Rings - made of silver, gold or bronze, often with intricate knotwork designs or inscriptions.
  5. Thor's hammer pendants / Mjolnirs - made of bone, silver or bronze, worn for protection and to honour the god Thor.
  6. Filigree - a technique where fine wires of gold or silver are twisted together and soldered onto a base to create intricate designs.
  7. Repoussé - a technique where metal is hammered from the back to create a raised design on the front.
  8. Granulation - a technique where small gold or silver beads are fused onto a surface to create a pattern or design.
  9. Cloisonné - a technique where metal wires are used to create compartments, which are then filled with enamel. We use it for fine Mjolnirs forging.
  10. Engraving - designs are etched onto metal surfaces with a sharp tool.

These are just a few examples of the many types of jewellery and techniques used during the Viking Age and we using today. The Vikings were skilled craftsmen, and their jewelry continues to inspire and impress us today.

SKÅL!

PS. Skål! Spelled variably as Skål, Skál, Skaal, Skoal, or Skol (depending on country and how it’s transliterated in English), it’s the ubiquitous Scandinavian “cheers” that no drink of aquavit would be complete without. If you’re a Minnesota Vikings Football team fan you might recognize this word from “Skol, Vikings”, the fight song that plays when the team scores a touchdown.

But where did it come from?

One of the most popular stories is that Skål derives from the Old Norse word for Skull – and that Vikings celebrated their war victories by drinking from the skulls of their vanquished enemies. As badass (and a bit metal) as that sounds, it’s not quite the truth, not part or real story.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, aquavit - high spirit content alcohol didn’t exist until a few hundred years after the end of the Viking Age. However, many modern Scandinavian drinking traditions, including the Skål toast, trace their roots back to the Vikings who drank beer and mead copiously.

Skål comes from the Old Norse word Skál, meaning bowl. Coincidentally it is from the same root as the Old Norse word “skalli”, meaning “bald head”, which eventually morphed into the modern English word skull.

Why bowl? Well, back in the Vikings’ days, drinking at parties and festivals was done from communal ale bowls that looked like the one below. So when a Viking yelled, “Skál”, they were really saying, “pass me the beer!”

Next time you’re downing a shot of ice cold aquavit, don’t forget the “Skål”!:)
