"Viking Age Jewelry with Zoomorphic Motifs and Beasts from Norse Mythology: An Archaeological and Iconographic Analysis"

The Vikings were known for their skilled craftsmanship and their intricate metalwork, particularly in the creation of jewelry. Many Viking Age artifacts feature zoomorphic motifs and beasts from Norse mythology, which reflect the cultural and religious beliefs of the Norse people. This study examines a selection of Viking Age jewelry pieces with such motifs, using archaeological and iconographic analysis to better understand their significance.

The current study analyzes a sample of Viking Age jewelry pieces with zoomorphic motifs and beasts from Norse mythology, including brooches, pendants, arm rings, and neck rings. The artifacts were examined using a range of techniques, including microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and 3D scanning. The iconographic analysis involved a study of the animals depicted in the jewelry and their significance in Norse mythology.

Our Artisans study found that the animals depicted in Viking Age jewelry often had symbolic meanings in Norse mythology. For example, the wolf was associated with Odin, the chief god of Norse mythology, while the dragon was associated with Thor, the god of thunder. The use of these animals in jewelry was likely intended to convey a sense of power and strength to the wearer. The study also found that many of the jewelry pieces examined were made using complex metalworking techniques, such as filigree and granulation, which demonstrate the skill and craftsmanship of Viking Age artisans.

Viking Age jewelry with zoomorphic motifs and beasts from Norse mythology provides important insights into the cultural and religious beliefs of the Norse people. The use of such motifs in jewelry was likely intended to convey a sense of power and strength to the wearer, and the complexity of the metalworking techniques used demonstrates the skill and craftsmanship of Viking Age artisans.
