Cernunnos: The Ancient Horned God of the Celts

In ancient Celtic and Gallo-Roman religion, Cernunnos, also known as Carnonos, is a revered deity depicted with antlers and seated cross-legged. Associated with stags, horned serpents, dogs, and bulls, he embodies the natural world's wild and untamed spirit. Often portrayed holding or wearing a torc and sometimes a bag of coins or grain, Cernunnos symbolizes abundance and fertility.

Cernunnos's name derives from the Proto-Celtic word "karnon," meaning "horn" or "antler." This etymology connects him to the natural elements and the Celtic tribes, such as the Carnutes, known as "the Horned Ones."

With over fifty depictions and inscriptions, primarily from north-eastern Gaul, Cernunnos's presence in ancient mythology highlights his importance in the Celtic pantheon. Though his exact origins are debated, he is often linked to other deities like Mercury or Dis Pater due to their shared associations with the afterlife and the underworld.

Cernunnos remains a fascinating figure, embodying the mystery and richness of ancient Celtic religion.
